For those of you who haven't yet, check the front page. I've signed up for the Dresden playtest. Not sure when Evil Hat's going to drop the files, but when they do, the playtest is on.

I know that Wildduck is in on this too, and Spazman was, I think, in the first group of playtesters. I propose that we create a Dresden Files RPG category on this board, since I know that quite a few listeners, and all of the hosts, are going to be involved in the playtesting. This forum seems to be a central enough place to talk about it between playtest groups.

Rather than post DFRPG stuff on the main site, I'm going to give any of my players who want to get in on this posting privileges on my blog. I've left it alone long enough, and now I'm going to have some use for it.

So does that mean our weekly group will get to playtest it? Also, is the system going to be unique, or is it based on something?

If the weekly group wants to, then yes, absolutely. The rules are based on the FATE System, which is the same system that Spirit of the Century uses. I fully intend to run at least one game of that first, just to get people familiar with the rules. The link I posted is to the SotC SRD, if you're interested in how the system works. It's actually pretty simple.

The Dresden rules are still incomplete, so a lot of stuff is likely to be broken. I have a feeling that we'll be frequently stopping mid-session to slog through rules, so it's actually going to be as much work as it is play.

Yeah, I'm all for playing the Dresden system. We could use it as filler between SR4 and WTF. It might help take the edge of "Oh shit gotta get the game ready!" panic off of Kristin.

I signed up to receive updates and do playtesting as well. I love the Dresden Files universe, so this is going to kick some serious ass, to say so scientifically.

I don't get the feeling the Burning alpha will be so much "playing" as testing out bits. I think after the weekend Fred will release some material for us to chew on it bit will hardly be complete.

That said I'm really exited about taking whatever Evil Hat has out for a spin, and I'll totally post about it here.

It looks like there's a delay getting the next stack of PDFs out. We need to figure out when we're running through this stuff, and who's going to be involved. Obviously this Sunday's out. I ask only because it's important to get this stuff done and get feedback to the Devs in a timely manner.

New York would be fun, but there's probably going to be a lot built there. Corpus Cristi, Texas? Get both the Texan flavor, along with red necks, the beach people, and tourists.

I'm digging the idea of a coastal city. Not totes sold on Texas. Consider Savannah, Georgia for the Southern liberal feel. Huntington Beach for a surf-heavy vibe. Maybe Oakland for its proximal familiarity?. Or head inland a bit and build a magical Eugene, Oregon.

This is awesome. I hadn't realized it while we were creating the city, but The 40 Mile Loop actually goes around almost the entire city (compare that map with the google map of Portland). That means it really can be an effective circle of protection for the whole city.

Also, the real Loop isn't actually complete, though naturally in the game it is. Dawn had a pretty cool suggestion when I was telling her about it. The yellow parts of the loop on the map might not be "officially" complete, they might be areas that the magical denizens of the city have helped complete.

Dawn also remembered something her friend had told her when she visited there. There are apparently tunnels under the real Old Town in Portland. Tunnels under cities are -awesome-.

I was in Portland in hmm, 2002? or thereabout for a week, visiting a 'net friend. I stayed downtown for most of the trip, with a day off to go to the zoo and the Japanese Gardens. Anyway, I vaguely remembered Melly mentioning something about tunnels so I Googled. Here's a link to check out.

The fun bits are towards the bottom under "Portland, Oregon: A City's Shady Past" and "The Portland Underground: Shanghai Tunnels". I was especially amused by the "blood money" bit (Stopping for a drink in such notorious establishments as Erickson's Saloon, the Snug Harbor Saloon, and the Valhalla Saloon, people became unsuspecting victims who found themselves beneath the streets in tunnels and being carried out to the waterfront and sold for "blood money". ) after what Sean said about you guys putting vampires down at the waterfront. It's almost like you knew! ;) Maybe Portland was subconsciously...influencing you.

Oh, plus there are ghosts about in Oldtown ("Northwest Paranormal Investigations" has proclaimed that the shanghai tunnels are the most haunted place in Oregon and, perhaps, the most haunted place on the West Coast.)

Dawn should hopefully make it to the next Dresden session. She wanted to come to this one, but was too sleepy to be coherent. She had lots of ideas when I got home, though. Having read all of the books she has a much more complete picture of the Dresden world than I do.

I don't know if it's been explicitly stated yet, but the process for creating cities for the DFRPG is fucking awesome so far. Since we're testing it, is there anything that isn't working real well? I know it's time consuming, but, then, we came up with a lot of locations. Is there anything that didn't particularly work, or was significantly unclear?

We developed a solid, working theme early on which guided us through the rest of the creation. Also, we came to the table with a lot of ideas, and had a laptop-jockey googling away. We spent about four hours and had a playable city. But, we didn't make it to the end of the city-building chapter. And the last few pages suggest doing some massive legwork. Which is both impractical and time consuming. The pacing of city creation seems a little off. We had an awesome experience, but I don't know how much the rules-as-written influenced that.

Yeah, I think there were just so many flavor bits we found in Portland, so much more than we'd anticipated. I know it took a long time but I think that was bulk. That, and we got a lot of really fucking cool shit for 3 hours of city creation. I think limiting the number of places would work better, since even 2 per player results in a lot of info. Is there anything that allows for adding these locations as the game progresses? Almost like being in the middle of play and having the "You know where this needs to take place? That giant corporate area on the south side of town" and adding aspects, people, and magic from there.

Also, Sorry Randy & Amnesiac. I was wiped yesterday after Sunday Funday and all the excitement that was Mondays. :) Next time, though, I'll be all over this like a sorority girl on cock. Wait...no, that's what I meant.

True. On the other hand, had we stuck to the recommended number of locations I think we probably would have finished. On first reading, I got thoroughly confused between themes and concepts and aspects and what to use where, but it made a lot more sense in practice.

Hey, be glad you didn't pick a city like New Orleans!! ;) I do hope that they give that one a write-up for the actual game though 'cause if there's any city in the US that has mystic atmosphere, it's the Big Easy. Maybe they won't because of the whole Anne Rice overexposure. Meh. She's such a blip in that city's rich history.

If you'd stuck with something in Texas, I would have recommended doing San Antonio. If there's any place in the state of Texas that's haunted, it's The Alamo. Creepy damn place; I've been there. Plus the water canals are just cool.

I know you don't need more ideas for places but did the Portland Saturday Market get brought up? www.portlandsaturdaymarket.com It could make a great place to get information or hand-crafted stuff. You know how wizards need the low-tech stuff. ;) Plus I could see it being a place to pick up oddball things too, no reason at all why the magical community couldn't be rolled into it. It's there most of the year, March through December, on both Saturdays and Sundays.
