    WikipediaChangelings

The offspring of a fae and a mortal is called a changeling. They may have odd appearances depending on their parentage. The offspring of a human and a troll, for example, may appear as a human which is incredibly tall and broadly built with a bulky mass and well-defined jaw. Other changelings have been shown as simply having oddly colored hair, such as naturally green hair. Changelings must eventually Choose whether to become a mortal or to become a Sidhe. Upon making the Choice, the changeling becomes completely either mortal or Sidhe, no longer retaining any of the characteristics of the other half. It is unknown if there is any specific time or age at which a changeling must Choose, but during times of war, they are affected by the calling to Choose just as the Wyldfae.

That excerpt is fairly accurate, but it gets one thing wrong, and omits a few details.

"Changelings must eventually Choose whether to become a mortal or to become a Sidhe."

That line is wrong. The Sidhe are a very specific type of fae, and not all Changelings are half Sidhe. They can be any type of fae.

A Changeling's appearance at birth is just like a normal human, they take on their fae aspects later. What specifically sets off this change isn't stated explicitly, though one example is given of a young half troll girl lifting a car off of her brother after an accident and by the next day her hair had turned green. I assume puberty can be a catalyst as well.

Changelings are bound to the Court of their parents, either Winter or Summer, though not as tightly as a pure fae. So far as I know there are no limitations on what their fae half can be, though I assume something like a half pixie would be more rare, given the size difference.

In play, they would like have one or more aspect related to their fae parent. I have no idea how the Choice will be handled, but most likely some types of Changelings will be unplayable if they choose immortality. A troll, for example, would be -wildly- unbalanced in normal play.

I'm pretty sure Evil Hat will make a provision for changeling and I don't think any of them will be unbalanced, simply because of the fate system it sits on. All I need to do to make a troll's kid in Fate *AND* represent the strength they have without being wildly overpowered is take an aspect "Half-troll" or, more interestingly "Daughter of Olgeg the Troll" which would allow you to use the aspect in physical as well as social situations, as well as be a great compel for the GM. That aspect *would* help you lift a car (you'd probably want to have a good might skill to back that up as well) but it wouldn't make the character unbalanced.

I'm quite sure a changeling pre-choice can be balanced pretty easily. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a changeling who has chosen to become fully fae. A half troll is balanced. A full troll is a wrecking ball.

Agreed... in the playtest material Fred has two axioms, one is "Mortals have free will, monsters have nature." Basically the more powerful you get, the less choice you have. Mechanically this works by giving more powerful creatures fewer fate points, which makes it harder for them to resist a compel. If you have 0 fate chips and the GM compels you to break the bones of your enemies and eat their marrow.... guess what bud, you just turned monster. I haven't seen any details, but I'm guessing that full "fey" creatures will not a player character option. As for changeling adopting their fey parent's nature, my guess is that there will be a lot of opportunities to gain power, but always at a cost.

Yeah, there's a ton more stuff for all of these locations and faces that we talked about, I'll flesh it all out eventually. I really like the vampire we made. He's not pretty. I'm fucking sick of pretty vampires. I want a vampire that's a fucking monster. I also liked the idea of a black court vampire. They're a lot less common, but the ones that are left are a lot stronger. Also, being a Native American means he never really has to worry about native soil. -All- of Portland is his native soil.

I agree, one thing Butcher does, that kind of annoys me some times is make everything sensual (if not sexual). Harry rarely meets a woman that isn't drop dead gorgeous… often supernaturally so. I'm fine with romance, sex, etc, but sometimes if feels tacked onto the story. Butcher does a good job of recognizing this by having Harry narrate how his libido always wants to have it's say, but still, it feels excessive. I'm down with a really ugly mug who actually has power (not just a mook).

Much as I'd like to agree, I don't think we're going to have any place called "The Woods". Maybe "The Sands" or "The effing Desert", but probably not Woods. Not that people in Vegas aren't psycho enough to import a whole rainforrest and enough water to keep it alive for their own amusement, but it just doesn't fit the theme.

We will, however, have a strong Native American theme going on. I believe "Grandfather Eagle is Displeased" is a aspect we're going to use for the Valley of Fire when we flesh it out. I might steal some shit from you... "There is an out of towner named Benny coming in with spme business with the Cheif. I've heard he scary as hell, stay clear of him man."

The reason it's called The Woods is because all of the streets are named after trees. Hell, even Freddy Krueger said that every town has an Elm Street. I don't think that Babe meant that every town has a place called The Woods. But almost every town I've ever been to has that one neighborhood with the generic tree names. We just took that common element of suburbia and made it disturbing and sterile.

What Shaun said. It's that place, generally a suburbia, where all the trees and natural elements have been cut down an replaced, but all the streets are ironically named "Walnut" and "Pine" and "Redwood". Hence, "The Woods"

True and true. However, I have to point out that for most of the series Butcher has been very good at emulating the "hard-boiled detective" type of story with a supernatural twist. In that genre there are certain stereotypes that are inherent to any story, and the vamp is one of them (vamp in this case meaning sexy woman who always spells trouble for the protagonist detective). He could bring in a plane-jane or downright ugly female character, but for me that would actually detract from my enjoyment of the type of story being told. It just wouldn't fit easily into my sense of the setting.

See, I love the sexy, sultry, dangerous vampires. But that's because I believe that's how they're suppose to be. That's how Bram Stroker wrote vampires, so forever in my mind they'll be seductive creatures. There's plenty of ugly monsters out there. I have no problem with the beautiful ones.

Yes, the vamp, or femme fatale is trope of the genre, and a good one. It beomes wearysome for me because unlike many "hard-boiled detective" stories, the Dresden Files are serial. Everything since Storm Front applies to every book. So, this means that by Proven Guilty harry has had this list of drop dead gorgeous ladies in his life: Murphy, Susan, Bianca, Justine, Tara (sp? the Werewolf from Fool Moon), his Godmother, Mab, Maeve, Lily, Aurora (lots in that book), Lara Raith, Trixie Vixen, Shelia (yeah, I know, but I don't want to give any spoilers), Laciel, and probably half a dozen others that I have missed. I think even Butcher is having a hard time describing how all of these women could be so amazingly attractive and different at the same time.

Now don't get me wrong, I love the books, I like the ladies, I just think Jim's format is catching up with him and leaving him less and less room to create new, interesting women without me groaning "another beautiful woman.. again?" when I see them.

I think more episodic stories can get away with this because each woman appears and only for a single story (for example Bond Girls) and the audience had come to expect that the protagonist has basically forgotten about/written off/moved on from his previous female encounters.

You know, I totally agree, I just suggestion that you introduce them with discretion. If every vampire is "teh hotness" then that aspect becomes boring. So have one, or two, or five, sexy, sultry characters, but make sure they are all very different and that you don't create carbon copies of them. Also, give them something besides being sexy. Do that and I think you're set. Finally, think of some non-conventional beauty. You're a total tom-boy Babe and I think you're hot. Don't be afraid to introduce vampires that have an allure but don't fit the playboy model format.

Their main location is in Old Town and is open 24 hours. Just the thing for late night magic sleuths to get their caffeine and sugar fix. Or an emergency voodoo doll (doughnut) substitute for spellworking. Also, they even do legal weddings there. (The service is performed by ordained ministers beneath the holy doughnut and a velvet painting of Isaac Hayes.) You can even buy clothes, shirts, black underwear, with their slogan "The Magic is in the Hole" printed on it.

Silly movie about them can be found at gimmedoughnut.com

Looks like we get character creation stuff, but nothing on magic yet, so we'll be creating non-wizard characters first, and then busting out with the magical powerhouses when that chapter drops. You know if you guys want any first hand information or pictures of or about Portland, I do sorta live here. One theme you might be interested in is the cultural divide of east/west here, The East is more Upright and Proper while the West is sorta Wing-nutty and Wacky. Naturally I prefer to live with the crazy folks in the west. Also the city is divided into Quadrants by the River and Burnside St, each general quadrant has its own vibe as well. You might have gone over all of this already though so, blah!

Also you cant forget about The Max, the light rail system that works via the Honor System for paying your fare-You can always get around if you're willing to run from Tri-Met fare inspectors.

So, I settled on a name. Martin Dover Gentry. And after a little digging I found a look for him. Early 80's preppy. White Izod shirts (the ones with the alligator) black corduroy pants, and white tennis shoes. Occasionally, when he's feeling dressy, a sweater tied loosely around the shoulders. Now, at the time, pastel colors were big with preppy fashion. Martin, of course, only wears stark blacks and whites. Also, as far as the madge fairies go, I found this to partially base them off of.

Also, Dawn thought of something awesome regarding the Spring and Autumn courts. So, we have established that Spring was working towards building their own court, but haven't gone into detail on how Autumn built theirs. Dawn's idea was that it wasn't a joint effort, and that Spring didn't even realize that their would be an Autumn court. The Autumn side of the rivalry we talked about knew that Spring was trying to establish themselves, and knew that something would have to balance it out. So while keeping up the rivalry on the surface, she was actually helping Spring build her court and setting herself up to take up the mantle of Autumn.

Background: Calista was a military brat, moving from city to city with an unhealthy frequency. She was never around long enough to learn how to truly connect with a person, but she is the master at making shallow and superficial connections with the popular kids.
    Aspect: Always the New Kid

Rising Conflict: Struggling through firefighter training, Calista is dazzled by a another woman in training who flys effortlessly through the tests. This other woman, Daisy, offers to "train" with Cat, but instead brings her to the pack. The pack is made up of, what an outsider would call, feminist eco-terrorist werewolves, but to Cat, they were...power. And they just wanted that small price, they just wanted help saving the surrounding wild forests and brush, fighting the fires and, well, keeping people out. The only problem is that there's no people to save and take pictures with forests...
    Aspect: Member of the Pack

    First Novel: 2nd Degree
Fighting an urban fire, a person, a child, gets the majority of their body covered in bad burns, but survivable ones. When the child's health fails and she dies, a jealous co-worker's spell is to blame ("they already lowered the standards when they let a woman in, and she's been stealing the spot light ever since"). Whether it's true or not, Calista believes it was the first decision she made when she entered the building was the wrong one, and she was the reason the child got so horribly burnt and then died. The city feels the same, and suspends her without pay while they investigate. Hero firefighter downgraded to a blemish upon Station 42. The pack reacts about the same: Not only has she shamed women, she's brought unwanted attention to the pack. On top of that, they lost both the monetary gain and power they had gained by her being the shining star of the station. On top of beating the shit out of her, she's downgraded to the status of the lowliest soldier. She has to clear her name before they press her with a murder charge, but can she do that with both the town and her pack against her?
Aspect:: Working on it....struggling with this one...
