Cool. It's partially dependent on how many LP's we go with, but The following looks pretty good for a 4 LP character. Born Chattel lead to Black Legion Goblin Legioner Nightseeker
It's kind of low on skill points, but there are some advantages that make up for it. Doesn't hurt that it gives access to Brawling, Shield, Spear and Garotte. Also, since Tasting the Lash shows up twice as required Traits, you wind up getting a free point to use on something cool. Like Running (Away).
Regardless of whether I end up liking the game, I fucking -hate- playing a game I'm unfamiliar with when there's only one book available. Figured removing that irritation would improve my chances of enjoying it.
Posted By: RandyI like advancing quickly. Let's build with 4 LPs. Our 5 LP Deadwood characters have sort of hit the advancement wall.
Naw, naw....that just means we have to do more crazy shit if we want to advance. No more "I'm looking for someone, just anyone" rolls. Now its "I'm looking for that cocksucking son of a bitch that shot my pa. Who just happens to be a noble. And I need him now."
Awesome! Take Crane's advice and read the rulebook in chunks. Dig in to the first 75 pages. Drink and sweat those pages, they are the core of the rules system. Similarly, absorb the first 40 pages of the Character Burner.
Oh hey guys, did I mention how you can all go fuck yourselves? I'm so god damn jealous that not only are you running a Burning Deadwood game, you're ALSO starting waht looks like some high fantasy game. Shit all over my happy space here.
Okay, not fair to be mad... but jealous. Hell yes. And yeah, I've already heard Shaun's remark about do it myself. It's coming... just not nearly fast enough.
Also, how much have you read about Burning Empires. I'm looking at the Burning Warcraft game I'm going to run and realize it really needs macro level mechanics to represent the War. Any thoughts on porting the Macro mecahnics back to BW?
I have Burning Empires, and the Infection mechanics are awesome. They don't work quite as well in BW for a couple of reasons. First, it paces the game like a comic book. Second, I believe that the advancement charts in BW are different, to accommodate the fact that a BE campaign is very much finite, whereas BW is intended to be played for longer than the game has actually been out.
That being said, the trick to using the macro level mechanics is to realize that what you do per scene in the micro game doesn't really affect what happens in the macro level. Rather, the Maneuver that you pick should influence what conflicts and scenes you have during the maneuver - it's sort of a large-scale scene framing mechanic. I'm sure you can modify it to your purpose, just realize that it's going to pace your game differently, and force an end to the campaign eventually.
We really need to get our BW game started. One shots are cool and all, but as occasional flavor, not the main course. I prefer long term campaign play.
Ha! Found an answer for the +x Ob penalty when rolling versus tests. You count successes beyond the Ob penalty as net successes. We'll use last night's fist fight as an example.
Burly the soldier has a Superficial wound, giving him a +1 Ob to tests. He and Jonas are in a fight. He rolls 4 successes on a Brawl, Jonas gets 3. The correct way of handling it works like this: Burly takes away one success for the Ob penalty - that penalty works like a threshold. He has to beat that first. Jonas' Ob is still set by Burly's total successes - 4 - so she doesn't achieve her intent, but since Burly only winds up with 3 net hits, he ties with Jonas, meaning nobody gets their intents.
Basically, we had the correct outcome, even if we didn't handle the rules quite right.
